Marshall University provides extensive "state-of-the-art" computing and network services in support of teaching/learning, research, and administrative functions. The Marshall University network provides over 8,000 Ethernet ports on its main campus and two regional campuses. These ports service more than 5,000 university owned computers all of which are on a four year lifecycle replacement. All network ports are switched Gigabit Ethernet with a 10Gb campus backbone. WiFi, 802.11a/b/g, wireless data services are provided in all general purpose classrooms and nearly 70% of other non-residential campus facilities. A personal Gigabit Ethernet connection is provided to each student in each residence hall room. The university provides web based services for all university business function (i.e., registration, fee payment, etc.) and each and every course has a web presence via the university web portal, myMU, and/or the university Course Management System, MUonline. The university provides over 150 fully on-line courses each semester to compliment the nearly 3,500 sections offered each semester. Faculty and students utilize myMU and/or MUonline to provide electronic course material to students, to encourage student to student and faculty to student collaboration and feedback, conduct assessments, and to facilitate many other aspects of the teaching and learning process. Computing Services operates an information technology "help desk" that is available on-line, via telephone, and/or as walk up service 85 hours per week and a student "24 Hour Study Center" equipped with high end personal computers, scanners, media transfer and recording equipment, and printing services. The university operates nearly 200 servers in the primary data center and disaster recovery facilities in two auxiliary data centers. Each student receives a personal account that provides a university email address, customized portal, 200MB of network storage space, and a personal web page address. Students are provided with a free Symantec/Norton antivirus license for any personally owned computer and significant discounts on computer hardware and software are available through the university bookstore or on-line with selected major vendors. The University Libraries provides an Amazon-like interface to their online catalog and access to over 16,000 electronic journalsthe Libraries scholarly databases received a meaningful hit every 21 seconds last year, and the full-text of a journal article was downloaded every 86 seconds. The Libraries teach information literacy to 4,500 students each year and promote the use of "chat reference," using IM technology. |
